This is a picture I captured at ‘Ardenne Abbey’, a monestary in Saint-Germain-la-Blanche-Herbe, near Caen, France. This was a German observation post where 18 Canadian POWs were taken and killed by by the German army on June 7th, 1944.
The lone poppy pressed into the concrete wall really stood out to me, as it’s such a strong symbol of the ongoing support of our veterans. What was really different was that this was the 1st week of September, a time where we generally don’t see a lot of symbolic poppies in Canada.
Remebering lives and breathes every day in this part of France, and makes me wonder why I don’t take the opportunity to consider and be thankful for these selfless sacrifices more than a few weeks per year.
