Most of us make commitments for the start of a new year – mine was to take care of myself a bit better, physically. I’m now officially in my mid-30′s, and I can’t continue the reckless lifestyle that I’ve enjoyed for the past 3 decades much longer, otherwise I’m not likely to reach my 50s with my original heart.
What makes this painful is my love for cooking delicious food. We entertain a lot and we love to try new things. The big issue is that *most* fantastic recipes are also heart-busters, with giant gobs of butter, cream etc.
Last night we had some friends over for dinner and we tried to make a dinner that was still really good, but still fairly healthy. I found a menu on
Cooks Illustrated for a Salmon dinner party, and thought it looked good. It was poached salmon with dill sour cream sauce with peas & parmesan orzo on the side. The salad was greens with a mustard vinaigrette and dessert was angel food cake with hommade raspberry coulis and a small spoonful of B&J whole bean vanilla ice cream.
Result? Not bad. The orzo was delicious, even though I hate peas for the most part. The salmon was tasty, but a bit heavy on lemon for my taste (they poach while sitting on a bed of lemon slices so the botttom of the pan doesn’t touch the fish). The salad and dessert were both pretty yummy for healthy stuff.
BTW – This is not going to turn into a “Julie & Julia” kind of blog…I hope.
