Arrived: First Zookbinders Album

After the long process of photo processing, selecting, album design and approval and then order, Pat and Josee’s album has finally arrived!!

Well worth the wait (and weight).  It’s a gorgeous 10×10 glove-leather-bound “lay-flat” style.  Each page layout is printed on archival-quality photo paper and ‘mounted’ to 1/8″ cardboard, which is gilded silver in colour.  At 60 pages, this sucker is heavy, but it’s beautiful and I think they’ll cherish it for decades.

I think that the photos in it are okay, too.  :)

Dueling Chefs 1 – Juniper vs Whalesbone

Well, last night was the 1st installment of “Dueling Chefs” and it was a total blast. The kitchen competitors were a load of fun to work with. There was a lot of good-hearted “trash-talk”, but the spirit was fun and the teams shared laughs, jabs, and the odd rum shooter during the evening.
The “black box ingredient” was Asian spices, and the guests were treated to some spectacular & creative culinary treats such as “East meets East”, a 2 Arctic Char fishcake dish (1 Atlantic-style and the other an Asian style), and a “Faux Pho” (a miso-broth with noodles, shiitake, an egg yolk, edamame & sliced beef with a hoisin sauce – to the best of my recollection) to name a couple. AWESOME!!!!

The competition was very close, with 1 judge calling it a tie, the other 2 judges split their votes, one for each Juniper and Whalesbone, and Chef Charlotte Langley’s Whalesbone team took the win by a tight popular vote with diners.

I’m really looking forward to next Monday, when Juniper faces-off against Allium – two of my favorite gastro-houses in the city!

Resolutions

Most of us make commitments for the start of a new year – mine was to take care of myself a bit better, physically. I’m now officially in my mid-30′s, and I can’t continue the reckless lifestyle that I’ve enjoyed for the past 3 decades much longer, otherwise I’m not likely to reach my 50s with my original heart.

What makes this painful is my love for cooking delicious food. We entertain a lot and we love to try new things. The big issue is that *most* fantastic recipes are also heart-busters, with giant gobs of butter, cream etc.
Last night we had some friends over for dinner and we tried to make a dinner that was still really good, but still fairly healthy. I found a menu on Cooks Illustrated for a Salmon dinner party, and thought it looked good. It was poached salmon with dill sour cream sauce with peas & parmesan orzo on the side. The salad was greens with a mustard vinaigrette and dessert was angel food cake with hommade raspberry coulis and a small spoonful of B&J whole bean vanilla ice cream.
Result? Not bad. The orzo was delicious, even though I hate peas for the most part. The salmon was tasty, but a bit heavy on lemon for my taste (they poach while sitting on a bed of lemon slices so the botttom of the pan doesn’t touch the fish). The salad and dessert were both pretty yummy for healthy stuff.

BTW – This is not going to turn into a “Julie & Julia” kind of blog…I hope.

Dueling Chefs

Juniper is hosting Ottawa’s first ‘Dueling Chefs’ competition, where each Monday evening between January 11th and March 15th, elite chefs from Ottawa’s ‘premiere’ restaurants will battle it out with Juniper’s team in the Richmond Rd. “kitchen stadium” Iron Chef style (chairman & all). The chefs’ battles will be videotaped and broadcast live through an internal, closed-circuit system for guests to enjoy the show as they eat.
I am excited to be photographing the weekly events – both the action in the kitchen and the food shots – check the blog each Tuesday for updates!
Tickets are $135/ea per night for a 3-course tasting menu from each team (paired with wines chosen by Eric Belchamber, Juniper’s Sommelier), along with a few ‘amuse bouche’.
