Vanessa & Abdeen’s actual wedding  back in December – a small, intimate marriage at Ottawa City Hall.  Vanessa contacted me in late winter, to photograph their reception/party, held at Juniper Kitchen and Wine Bar, to celebrate with friends and close family.

There were a lot of firsts for me.  I think it was the first time that I haven’t first shot an engagement session before a wedding, and it was definitely the first time I have shot a wedding reception and portraits, where there actually wasn’t actually a wedding that day.  It was also my first time being able to photograph gorgeous “Wish Lantern” celebration, and my first time having 2 slobbering bulldogs included in the Wedding portraits.  Vanessa said that they were their “kids”, and who wouldn’t include their kids?

Despite being INSANELY hot (especially for Abdeen in a 3-pc suit), it was a fantastic day.  The food was outstanding, people partied until well after 2am, and Vanessa and Abdeen included some really cool touches to represent their cultures – I’m calling it “Far East meets Middle East”, including Belly Dancers, Zaffeh – a Lebanese drum & dance group, and the Asian “Wish Lanterns”, which Vanessa and Abdeen were fortunate enough to have experienced while traveling in Thailand, and wanted to share that joy & beauty with their guests.

I love it when things that start kinda bad end-up working out super well.  When I met-up with Erin and Dustin for their engagement shoot, I was sheepishly chuckling, and calling myself the worst weather forecaster.  The day before, we had decided to postpone the session by one day due to fear of expected violent thunderstorms, then it ended up being a gorgeous evening on the original night, but grey, drizzly and sort of horrible on our “rain date”.

The rain didn’t bother either one of them, we had a great time getting some pretty cool photos around the Rideau Canal Locks beside the Chateau Laurier.  Erin and Dustin weren’t just great sports, they were a ton of fun to work with.  I remember at one point asking Dustin “ok, now let’s get a few without smiles” and Dustin responded “Sorry Christian, I’m having too much fun!!”.

I’m glad they were both troopers, because I think we got some pretty cool photos, not despite the rain, but also because of it.  I can’t wait for their wedding this fall at Marshes Golf Club!

I’ve actually known Chris for a while now – his sister is married to one of my closest friends, and we were both in his wedding party almost exactly 6 years ago.  Kami and Chris have been dating for a number of years now, and I was both thrilled and honoured when they contacted me to announce their engagement, and talk about photographing their upcoming wedding in Little Italy at St. Anthony’s Church (the unofficial, official Parish for Ottawa’s Italian Community), followed by a reception at the stunning Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau.

Since Chris works for the City of Ottawa, and I’m always looking for different places to shoot, I suggested City Hall in downtown Ottawa might be an interesting spot for their engagement session.  Despite some incredible heat – especially for late in the day, we had a good time, kept sweating mostly to a minimum, and I think we got some cool photos.  Both Chris and Kami wanted photos with a “fun/light” feel, not super-romantic or kissy-kissy.  Neither are really big on PDAs (public displays of affection), so rumour has it that their close friends are anxiously awaiting the wedding to see if they’ll actually kiss in public view.

I’m really looking forward to the wedding at the very end of August – I’m sure it will be a blast!
